HOME : PERSONAL : PHILOSOPHY

It is my design philosophy to teach students, as well as beginning typographers, that the principles of graphic design and typography coincide in all media forms. The historical records and influences of the past transcend our current setting. History chronicles how the printed word has changed the course of mankind. I have no doubt the animated and spoken word, delivered electronically or otherwise, will continue to do so. I have no greater fulfillment as an educator than to witness the moment when a student appreciates the craft of typography regardless of the composition tool. While often overlooked by some, typography is the most important aspect of communication.

My professional practice revolves around my educational obligations. I am determined to work in the areas in which I teach. Rediscovering design traditions and improving technical skills are vital to the future of the design industry. When appropriate, I use my own experiences and projects as teaching tools. Living in a unique synthesis of urban and rural in the Tulsa area comes with challenges. While a hindrance to some, it provides unique opportunities to solve problems for clients who would otherwise do without. I accept these challenges, and hope my clients and students are well served.
